Think Tom Tomorrow or Ted Rall with a more progressive bent and you’ve got a fairly good footing to approach Stephane McMillan’s strips. The art strikes me as a cross between Lynda Barry and Lloyd Dangle. Ah, crap. Sorry about all the comparisons. They just gloss the surface. I find this better, rawer and fresher than all the aforementioned scribblers. Ironic wit and dead-on commentary make this brilliant strip shine. Police brutality, "mad capitalist disease", human rights, animal rights, and the WTO are all touched on intelligently and very humorously in this thin sampler volume. Perhaps the only thing holding Minimum Security back is the stodgy nature of the alternative weeklies it was made for. The things resemble ad sheets more than a vehicle for actual journalism, independent thought, or even good cartoons like these. Never fear, readers. a New cartoon is posted each week at www.MinimumSecurity.net so screw the newspapers. Highly recommended. All ages. 16 pgs. 5.5 x 8.5". Xeroxed. All b/w. top |
